Recent field research with Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) and related species
Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica, Polygonum cuspidatum), an adult female growing along the Monatiquot River in Braintree, Massachusetts. The brown is last year's growth, still amazingly upright after several winter storms.
A leaf from Fallopia sachalinensis, collected from a population in Hawley, Massachusetts. So big, I couldn't even fit the whole thing in my scanner!
This plant was germinated from a seed taken from a potential hybrid between F. japonica and F. sachalinensis. Its true parentage (as well as the classification of its maternal parent) remains to be determined.
